| Technical Feature Writing & Regular Departments The Family Handyman magazine, a Reader's Digest publication |

| I have been a regular, contributing editor to The Family Handyman since early 2006. Learning how to work with art directors, photographers, set builders, copy editors, post-production professionals and illustrators has been the most fun I've had in years. Full length features -Treasures in the Attic: (LINK TO FULL TEXT) This installment for the magazine's Remodel Right Department is a combination of light technical and subject profile taking a reader through a remodeling process. - First Aid for your Lawn: a five step how-to story that including intensive location scouting and multiple photo shoots -Fool Proof Faucet Installation: a tip story that illustrated the pitfalls of faucet installation. This story required the building of a set and working with outside experts. -Critter Proof your House: This story required working with outside experts, location scouting, on-site and studio photo shoots -Flip a Switch, Save $50: I wrote several mini-repair stories and flowed them together to best serve the reader. An on-site photo shoot was required. -Closet Organizer: This cover story (green cover top left) challenged me to work with experts to design and build a simple, inexpensive closet organizer. There are more features slotted to appear in upcoming summer issues. I would describe them, but don't want the Reader's Digest legal team tumble rolling into my home office. Departments Currently I edit two regular departments, Great Goofs and Handy Hints. I work in-studio with a set-builder, art director and photographer to get the best images possible to tell the "how-to" story of Handy Hints in one or two images. Great Goofs is an illustrated department that has me collaborating with talented artist, Steve Bjorkman. I rewrite the submitted work for both departments. The December/January, February and March 2006 issues feature my work as a guest editor for the Remodel Right department. Link to Handy Hints and Great Goofs |
